Indra Jatra Celebration

Indra Jatra is the celebration of God’s Day. Indra Jatra is celebrated in Kathmandu, the capital city of Nepal. It is celebrated in honor of Indra. Today, a day before Indra Jatra, we celebrated Indra Jatra at school. We, all students in Grade 2, had worn Newari dress or cultural dress. Each of us had an important role to play during the celebration. Some of our friends had become Kumari, Bhairav, and Ganesh. Some had become ‘Lakhey’ and ‘Jhyalincha’. Some played the role of Pulukishi. It was celebrated on the basketball court of our school. The entire school was present to watch the celebration.

We enacted the Indra Jatra as it is how it is celebrated on the main day. All the gods were worshiped, who were also in the attire of God and Goddess. There was a ‘Lakhey’ dance and a ‘Pulukishi’ dance. At last, we all performed a Newari song along with our teachers. After that, the whole school danced to a Newari song. After the celebration, we all went to our class and had ‘Samay Baji Bhoj’. It is important to celebrate these kinds of festivals in school, as it acknowledges the importance of Nepali religious festivals. It was a really fun day. I will always remember it for the rest of my life.
